7 July 2010 2 Comments

Swine flu is again threatening the country with infecting around 370 victims out of which 366 were infected with H1N1 in last one week. In this rating about 222 cases are from Kerala, 72 from Maharashtra, 31 from Karnataka, 22 from Tamil nadu and 19 from Andhra.

In Kerala about 10 died with swine flu and the death rate is 4 and 2 in Maharashtra and Andhra respectively.
Taking this regard Health minister said that there are already vaccines available and soon three more will be introduced to face the disease. His reason for the southern region being a prominent victim to this disease is that the lack of awareness about the vaccine he said.

He also said that eventhoug vaccines are available with abundance in stock people are not ready to take it.
The first swine flu vaccine was prepared by Zydus Cadila which came to market by last month. Even after its arrival people and medical personnel’s are not aware of it and they don’t even know the benefits and advantage of the vaccine.

I am surprised by Mr Ghulam’s comment that it is because people are not taking the vaccine. Where is the vaccine available? I cant see any visible campaign encouraging common people to use the vaccine. Chemists do not know about it and dont have stocks either.

The situation has been very very poorly handled by our health ministry last year as well as this year. The apathy, inefficiency and lack of responsibility and accountability is astounding. Mera Bharat Mahan ! And he takes credit for not many people dying ! Look at how other countries have handled and I can give a list of blunders to convnice any one of what I am saying.

CPL Biogicals will soon be producing the first swine flu vaccine using the Virus-Like-Particle method developed by Novavax in the USA. The vaccine is manufactured without using the virus itself. VLPs mock the virus. It has been successfully tested in a large trial, stage A and stage B, Mexico. A seasonal flu vaccine will also be produced, having had successful trials (phase II) in the US. This technology is the future of vaccines.
