Australia begins to record superbug new cases carrying NDM 1 enzyme

16 August 2010 2 Comments

UK already warned experts about the danger of NDM 1 that this NDM 1 may reproduce new superbugs by replication and now it warned the possibility of having new infections in numerous patients with the superbug.
A study conducted in patients recorded 37 cases carrying the NDM 1 gene and it may confer the almost total resistance to antibiotic.
Another study conducted last year revealed for 140 cases of NDM 1 in South Asia. This raise in the superbug carrying cases in South Asia threatens for global transmission of the enzyme. It is believed this speedy transmission may happen due to the facility available in India by low cost surgery.
Professor Peter Collignon of Canberra Hospital told that their country started recording NDM 1cases including three recently detected. He added that at least two of them had come from India after having treatment there.
He hoped that that their country should have to do something immediately to stop the patient and NDM-1 coming from India after treatment.

Where did the 3rd guy get it from? 140 from more than 1 billion .Excellent sample size to declare a whole country infected.Hope your companies learn to stop scaring your own citizens to make profits soon..though I doubt they ever will

most active drug against ndm containing bacteria is an old drug and long off patent (Colistin) so very unlikely that any pharmaceutical company will make much of a profit out of this problem.

Also ~3000 isolates were tested for ndm in chennai and the prevalence was 1%. In Haryana, Northern India the prevalence was 13% of 198 isolates tested. Now if 1 billion people were tested–what would the prevalence be? So would be good to not be so dismissive.
