Greek word otos and algos refer ear and pain. Otalgia a pain that appears or felt within the inner ear, ear canal or at external ear. There are many causative factors that cause the ear pain. Among them allergies, excess ear wax and infection are common. Ear pain of external ear is caused by otitis externa, live insects, trauma, foreign body, furuncle, herpes zoster, otomycosis, bullous myringitis, perichondritis of pinna and neoplasm.

Middle ear pain is caused by otitis media, acute mastoiditis, barotraumas, obstruction of Eustachian tube, trauma, effusion and neoplasm.
