The widely discussed, debated and often disregarded boxing match between the legendary Mayweather and the biggest star in the world of MMA, Conor McGregor, has been the combat sport's story of the year so far.

In recent weeks, McGregor has been posting videos which showed him training to box and sparring with boxers.

Floyd even denied thicker boxing gloves, compared to UFC's thinner gloves, would dampen the 28-year-old Irishman's punches. "You ain't got sh*t against me".

The conversation then took a turn toward the skills the two fighters possess going into UFC 209, most notably the matchup pitting Ferguson's wrestling against Nurmagomedov's sambo background from Russian Federation. Once Conor McGregor speaks to the UFC and his bosses, then we can make it happen.

Nearly everyone wants a mega-money fight against UFC sensation Conor McGregor, but not everyone is focused on the money. They know very little about boxing, and they mostly fight like they have no idea what they're doing. I mean, my manager is Conor McGregor's manager, and it looks like the deal is nearly done. "We're nowhere with it". The UFC gloves are really light in comparison to boxing gloves.

On Friday, UFC president Dana White told TMZ that the negotiations are not any closer than they have been, despite recent reports.

Now Nurmagomedov and Ferguson meet with the interim lightweight title on the line but the personal bad blood in this feud might go much deeper than any belt being handed out after the fight is over.

Speaking to Showtime while celebrating his 40 birthday, Mayweather said McGregor remained evasive over agreeing terms on the fight but was nevertheless hopeful over the fight materialising.

Although there was a rumoured breakthrough earlier this month that the two had agreed to a fight, it proved to be false as Mayweather quickly rubbished the speculation on his Instagram account.

But they might not see the result they want. You know why you asked for more money? It's just all a circus to me.

If Mayweather-McGregor fight is going to be successful, I think it's going to require that the MMA fans being the reason for it. Mayweather is obviously counting on the UFC fans purchasing it in high numbers so it can make a lot of money. "I'm going to break your career". McGregor would be out of his league even if he fought a contender in the welterweight division right now in my view.
