USA approves $418m sale of Air Tractor aircraft to Kenya

"This proposed sale contributes to the foreign policy and national security of the U.S. by improving the security of a strong regional partner who is a regional security leader undertaking critical operations against al-Shabaab and troop contributor to the AMISOM", the State Department said in a statement.

Among the packages are twelve Air Tractor AT- 802L converted cropdusters, two AT-504 trainer aircraft and some weapons, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced on Monday.

The sale will be handled by the prime contractor namely L-3 Communications, Platform Integration Division, Waco, Texas with no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.

The group has waged an insurgency in Somalia since 2006 to impose its version of Islamic law.

At least five contractor representatives would need to be assigned to Kenya.

One of the 8 Huey II helicopters that were donated by the USA government in 2016 to aid fight against terrorism.

Kenya is the fourth largest recipient of US aid for civilian counterterrorism operations, with $43 million earmarked over the past four years, and an additional $117 million for counterterrorism and border security programs.

The new aircraft are set to set to aid Kenya's F-5 jet fighters in the war against Somali militants.

The Bell UH-1H Huey is a daily workhorse with an expansive cabin providing multi-mission flexibility and a standard seating of 12 people.
