Mr Trump and Melania chose to start their Christmas celebrations by going to the midnight service at at Episcopal church in Palm Beach.

The Trumps started their evening at Mar-a-Lago, which hosts a Christmas dinner for members and their guests.

The president-elect and his wife, Melania, went to the two-hour service at the Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea.

The service ended after midnight, and the Trumps returned to Mar-a-Lago, where they were expected to celebrate Christmas with family and friends at the private club.

Melania and Donald were even married at the church in 2005. Meanwhile, as they entered the church, most worshippers got up to cheer until they took their seats.

The church has been frequented over the years by celebrities, socialites and professional athletes, including basketball legend Michael Jordan, who married Yvette Prieto there in 2013. The following year, Trump's son, Barron, was christened here too.

Church members had been on watch Christmas Eve for a possible visit from Trump, but church officials had declined to confirm throughout the week if Trump was planning to attend a service, and if so, which one.

The Rev. James Harlan's sermon encouraged church-goers to let the little things go. "We are confident that any possible security arrangements will not make attending our lovely Christmas worship any more challenging for those attending".

Melania Trump joined her president-elect husband for midnight mass in Florida wearing a very short mini dress as fellow churchgoers cheered wildly as they arrived.
