The United States doesn't necessarily have to stick to its long-standing position that Taiwan is part of "one China", president-elect Donald Trump said in an interview aired on Sunday.

The Global Times, a party-run newspaper, said in an editorial on Monday that the One-China policy "cannot be bought or sold" and indicated that China should consider arming American adversaries if the US supported Taiwanese independence.

Speaking on Fox News on Sunday, U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump made his first at-length direct comments on U.S. policy toward Taiwan since a historic phone call between him and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen more than a week ago.

He was responding to a question on his taking that call this month from Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, breaking with decades of U.S. diplomatic tradition that recognises Beijing as the sole representative of China.

Trump's questioning of long-standing US policy risks antagonizing Beijing further and analysts have said it could provoke military confrontation with China if pressed too far.

But McCain said that "somebody should hold China responsible" for its behavior with regard to Taiwan, Hong Kong, island building in the South China Sea and "propping up" North Korea.

Trump also said China was "not helping us at all with North Korea".

Knowing Trump, I think we can assume that "an hour or two" was more like 15 minutes.

"It was a very nice call".

"For China, there is no balancing of trade and Taiwan", said Wang Tao, head of China economic research at UBS AG in Hong Kong. Su Hao, director of the Center for Asia-Pacific Studies at China Foreign Affairs University, in Beijing, said the comment was a "careless and irresponsible" act that could "shake the foundation of the bilateral relationship".

On Sunday, China's top diplomat, State Councilor Yang Jiechi was traveling to USA neighbor Mexico, according to the official news agency Xinhua, but Mexican officials could not offer details. But Trump said without concessions from China, he did not see why it should continue.

DePetris also said China would also ignore existing sanctions on Pyongyang altogether, including the latest package that puts a significant cap on North Korea's exports of goal, the single biggest export item and source of hard currency for the impoverished nation. "In fact, the profits from these acquisitions will flow to Communist China, not to US interests or stockholders", the CAS's executive director Richard Berman, said in an email.

"Upholding the One China principle is the political basis for developing China-U.S. ties", Geng patiently told foreign reporters on Monday.

"Many people might be surprised at how the new USA leader is truly a "businessman" through-and-through", the paper said, referring to Trump's suggestion of using the "one China" policy as a bargaining chip. Writing that the Western media believe that Trump would use the "One China" policy to force a trade compromise on China, the newspaper continued: "It seems that such an analysis is credible". Global relations 101: China is an independent, sovereign state with its own national interests.
