Conway And Trump Stare At A Laptop To Dispel Rumors About Feud

Donald Trump's hunt for a secretary of state is veering into dramatic terrain, with the president-elect summoning Mitt Romney back for a second look as a top aide leads a public pressure campaign against the pick. In a notable break with her boss, Kellyanne Conway, campaign director for the Trump Campaign, noted that Romney represents a betrayal to those who voted for Trump.

The post has become one of the more controversial in a transition that has played out like a never-ending reality TV show, and whether it will result in the second straight MA politician leading the State Department remains an open question.

Conway refused to specify whether Trump knew, and approved, of her anti-Romney campaign.

Some of the names that cropped up for the post include former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton and Tennessee Sen.

On Monday, however, two high-level sources on Trump's transition team told MSNBC's Morning Joe that some of Trump's aides were reportedly "baffled" by Conway's comments and were concerned that she was "pushing her own agenda", adding that this behavior was "dangerous", according to the broadcast. They disputed reports that Trump was furious at her and suggested his decision to consider additional candidates instead highlighted her influence.

Officials jockeying for roles in an upcoming administration, including through the use of anonymous leaks to the press, is common, but such opening questioning is almost unheard of even as presidents-elect have searched for cabinet choices outside of their bases or from the opposing party.

"I would bet that Trump is seriously considering him because he's taking the time to meet with him again", said Republican strategist Dave Carney.

Conway, who is in Trump Tower today, said Trump understands that her comments about Romney come from a place of loyalty to the President-elect.

Conway said she was flooded with concerns about Romney on social media and on private lines.

There is a compelling case to be made for each of the three finalists for secretary of state, but perhaps there is a fourth option, a candidate who is essentially a composite version of the other three, who could satisfy the competing factions within the party, and the country as a whole.

But there are some Republicans who fear Giuliani will have a tough time getting through a Senate confirmation because of his foreign business ties. Kushner, who seems to have Trump's ear, has pushed back against his nomination over fears that Giuliani's global business dealings would make the confirmation process contentious.

Stein's organization also filed recount petitions in more than 100 precincts across Pennsylvania and vowed to submit more in the coming days.
