9-magnitude natural disaster strikes off the coast of Japan: USGS

The quake immediately triggered Pacific Tsunami Sensors and the Japanese government swiftly issued warnings for the Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures.

While tsunamis did occur, striking the mainland approximately one hour after the quake, the largest was 4.6 feet tall and caused no major damage.

One of the prime concerns on Tuesday was the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which suffered a catastrophic meltdown in 2011. A total of 12 people have been reported injured slightly in Fukushima, Miyagi, Chiba and Tokyo, including one struck by falling tableware at home and another cut by broken glass at a nursing home.

Japanese authorities urged residents in those northeast coastal areas to leave immediately for higher ground and not return until warnings had been lifted.

An initial tsunami warning was put out after reports of a rise in tidal waves along the coastline with the highest being in Sendai.

Waves around 4.5ft were spotted washing ashore around Sendai - which is roughly 45 miles north of Fukushima.

They also said that the tsunami risk was now over, although slight changes in sea level may be perceptible.

"I felt like the lessons of 3/11 were really taken to heart", Krauth said.

In 2011, an quake and tsunami struck the same area, claiming over 18,000 human lives and destroying parts of the coastline, including a nuclear power plant whose subsequent meltdown contaminated its surroundings.

Tuesday's magnitude 7.4 quake triggered mode.

In March 2011 the same region was hit by a 9-magnitude natural disaster, which unleashed a devastating tsunami that killed thousands of people.

"Aftershocks could continue not only for five years but as long as 100 years", Yasuhiro Umeda, a Kyoto University seismologist, said on Japanese broadcaster NTV. But some tsunami waves managed to flow up some rivers in certain areas. The vast majority of deaths in the 2011 disaster resulted from the tsunami.

Nissan halted work at its Fukushima plant, in the city of Iwaki, and evacuated the facility after the natural disaster, reported The Guardian.

The cooling system for a storage pool for spent nuclear fuel at the reactor at its Fukushima Daini Plant was initially halted on Tuesday, said a spokeswoman for Tokyo Electric Power, known as Tepco, but was restarted soon after. Tepco, the utility company, said it was monitoring the site closely.

Kazuhiro Onuki (kah-zoo-hee-roh oh-noo-kee) is a former librarian in a town that became a no-go zone because of radiation contamination. He was staying at what he calls one of his temporary homes on Tuesday.

Despite a one-metre high wave making landfall near the Fukushima nuclear power plant, Yoshihide Suga, cabinet chief secretary, said that it did not cause any problems.
