Mayor Beverly Whaling resigned rather than waiting to see if she would be fired.

Thousands of social media users decried the post's racism, but Whaling commented that Taylor had "just made my day".

She wrote that the post had made her day, but later said she was referring to the election outcome. I was referring to my day being made for the change in the White House!

She says she is sorry for everything that has happened, but says she now believes the situation has turned into a "hate crime against me".

"This is not the way I want my town portrayed and Michelle Obama's an articulate, handsome woman and referring to her as an ape in heels, obviously is a racial slur", said Clay resident, Joe Murphy.

The post and comments were subsequently deleted but were widely circulated online, sparking a furious backlash to a point an online petition was created and called for the resignation of the West Virginia mayor from her post.

Whaling put herself in the hot seat after she appeared to agree with a racist comment a Clay County corporate director shared on Facebook.

Beverly Whaling was mayor of the small town of Clay in West Virginia, America.

After accepting Ms Whaling's resignation, Council member Jason Hubbard said that her Facebook post was "horrific" and that "racial intolerance isn't what this community is about".

At one point, Ramsey Taylor posted an apology on her Facebook page.

After applauding Pamela's provocative comment, she could no longer hold her office and was asked to be stepped down. She apologised for the comment "getting out of hand".

On Monday, November 14, in the East Room of the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama speaks at a celebration for Joining Forces.

President Obama has been less popular in West Virginia than nearly any other state, and most of that has to do with his energy policies and how those policies impacted the state's coal industry. "Ms. Taylor's racist attitude is not indicative of the vast majority of white West Virginian's".

Whaling resigned yesterday, and the city council accepted her stepping down without a vote on the issue.
