Tsunami warnings have now been lifted for all of Japan's Pacific coast.

A powerful natural disaster struck near Fukushima, Japan, at approximately 6 a.m. local time on Tuesday morning, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami warning for residents on the island nation's east coast.

This cooling system restarted after about an hour and a half and there were no "abnormalities", increased radiation levels, or injuries at either facility, according to TEPCO.

The quake triggered a tsunami warning for Aomore, Iwate, Ibaraki and Chiba prefectures - warning of waves possibly 10 feet tall.

Tsunami waves of up to 1.4 meters (4.6 feet) have hit the Japanese coast after a magnitude-7.4 quake struck offshore Tuesday morning. "Flee!" in white lettering over a bright red band on the screen. "The biggest risk now is a case whereby contaminated water is carried away with the tsunami, which pollutes the environment", TEPCO's chief decommissioning officer Naohiro Masuda told reporters, of the situation at Fukushima Daiichi.

A small tsunami wave surged up the Sunaoshi River in Tagajo, Migayi Prefecture, after a magnitude 6.9 quake struck off the eastern coast of Honshu early on Tuesday, November 22.

The 5:59 a.m. quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 is believed to be an aftershock of the March 2011 mega-quake, the Meteorological Agency said. The tsunami warnings were downgraded to advisories at 9.46am, which were then called off at 12.50pm. It warned that waves of up to 3 meters (10 feet) could reach Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures.

Following the natural disaster, the agency warned of the possibility of a ten-foot tsunami hitting the Fukushima prefecture.

"With regards to Fukushima plant No. 1, it appears to be there is no problem inthe plant, but we proactively stopped operation of the contaminated water discharge system with a judgement that it could be problematic if it (radioactive water) leaks out", he said.

The government issued warnings on national broadcaster NHK, and sirens were sounded all over the eastern coastlines.

The Japan Meteorological Agency initially put the quake, which hit about 6 a.m. Tuesday (4 p.m. ET Monday), at magnitude 7.3 at a depth of only 6.2 miles.

The powerful quake also shook buildings in Tokyo, 230 kilometres to the south.

The Messina natural disaster in 1908 was a magnitude-7.5 quake that struck southern Italy and brought 13m-high tsunami waves. Several boats were overturned at sea.

Some evacuees took to Twitter to express their fears. This is the same region that was devastated in 2011 and NHK reminds the people of the catastrophe that left about 18,000 people dead.
