Anti-Trump protests around U.S. draw thousands Saturday

The protests - held in big cities like NY and Chicago as well as smaller ones, such as Indianapolis, Indiana, Worcester, Massachusetts, and Iowa City, Iowa - were largely peaceful Saturday.

There were also demonstrations in Chicago and Portland, where several thousand protesters gathered beneath MacArthur Park's palm trees holding placards including "Dump Trump" and "Minorities Matter", before marching toward downtown.

Members of the ANSWER Coalition, a broad-based USA protest group, have marched in this week's protests and aim to draw tens of thousands to an anti-Trump Inauguration Day rally, said Walter Smolarek, an organizer.

Trump, a Republican, launched complaints of his own on Sunday on Twitter, attacking the New York Times for coverage that he said was "very poor and highly inaccurate".

"They're saying, 'Are we going to be deported tomorrow?' " she said.

He said it would add to the "unrest" that's already in Mexico.

The demonstrations have been impromptu affairs, quickly organized, with weekend protests expected to swell in size.

On Sunday, around 100 people peacefully protested in front of the CNN building in Los Angeles, said a member of CNN security. Protests also flared in large metropolitan areas including Philadelphia, Oakland, San Francisco, and Chicago.

Some 59.5 million people voted for Trump, fewer than the 59.7 million who cast ballots for Clinton, but Trump's strong showing in swing states, including MI, earned him a decisive victory in the Electoral College that ultimately picks the president.

Some protesters began chanting threats including "Kill the Police", and officers moved in to arrest seven demonstrators. The Los Angeles Police Department warned that students from several local schools were planning to walk out from their classes Monday. "There is no way around that, and the sooner people grasp that, the better off we will be", he said.

In Oregon, protesters marched through Portland again Sunday night following a gathering of anti-Trump demonstrators earlier in the evening.

T.J. Wells, who had volunteered to work for Democrat Hillary Clinton's failed presidential campaign, said his decision to organize a Thursday night protest at Washington's Trump International Hotel near the White House was spontaneous.

"We talk about it nearly every day", she said. Officers also cited a number of arrests were tied to instances of protesters throwing projectiles at police, including bottles and lit road flares.

But Trump's strong showing in swing states, including MI, meant he triumphed in the Electoral College that ultimately picks the president.

In other parts of the country, the demonstrations on college campuses and along city streets were mostly peaceful, following previous outbreaks of window-smashing and fire-setting.
