On Wednesday, the police arrested the owner of the daycare centre and one help for allegedly assaulting a nine-month-old girl, causing severe injuries on her head and bleeding in her brain.

Navi Mumbai: Kharghar police arrested a maid-cum-helper and creche owner after CCTV footage revealed that the former slapped and threw a 10-month-old girl left in her care by her working parents, at Purva play school nursery in Sector 10, Kharghar. However, Nikam was later released on surety bail while Sheikh has been remanded in police custody.

Ruchita asked creche owner Nikam about it, but she did not get a proper response from the day care centre.

When they approached the doctor, he said it was a case of child abuse.

Senior police inspector Dilip Kale of Kharghar police station said, "After this incident came to light, we started checking the CCTV footage of the daycare centre". The shocking footage later went viral on social media.

Afsana Nazir Sheikh beat up the child several times and even flung it up to calm the howling baby.

Local social activists and shaken citizens have demanded regularisation of such private creches with a strict code of conduct, as working parents drop their children there with enormous trust. "We have decided to make it compulsory to install CCTVs at play schools, to avoid recurrence of such incidents", she said.
