Artists become eligible for the Rock Hall 25 years after they release their first album or single.

That means Pearl Jam and Tupac Shakur became eligible for nomination this year.

MC5 released its first album in 1969 and was previously nominated for the Hall of Fame in 2003.

One of the most influential and celebrated R&B groups of all time, TLC dominated the '90s with hits like "Waterfalls", "Creep", "No Scrubs" and "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" after debuting with Ooooooohhh...

Hosts Lori Majewski and Nik Carter were joined live by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation CEO Joel Peresman and 2014 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Stevie Van Zandt, who announced the coming year's crop of artists.

The 2017 nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have been announced, and this year's group has something for nearly everyone. Classic rock bands like Journey, Electric Light Orchestra and Yes are also included. "It's been going since the blues, jazz, bebop, soul, R&B, rock and roll, heavy metal, punk rock and yes, hip-hop".

It's not just about nationality - look at notable Hall Of Fame Absentee Meat Loaf, who left a sizable carbon footprint on musical history with Bat Out Of Hell.

Pearl Jam, Tupac Shakur and ELO are amongst the new names on the shortlist, joining previous nominees Chic, Chaka Khan, J. Geils Band and more.

Last year, the KISS frontman and rapper Ice Cube went head to head over N.W.A's induction into the 2016 Hall of Fame and Simmon's continuous comments suggesting rappers shouldn't be inducted. Still, that pales in comparison to Chic's 11-time tally, according to Rolling Stone. Inductees are determined by over 800 artists, historians, and music industry professionals. The ceremony will be held in April 2017 at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, NY, and will be broadcast at a later date on HBO. The public can cast votes through December 5 on sites including and at The top five acts will comprise a "fan's ballot" that will count as one of the ballots that determine the class of 2017.
