About 35.6 million Americans watched the U.S. vice presidential debate between Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Tim Kaine on television, according to preliminary data on Wednesday, about half the number who tuned in to Donald Trump's first matchup with Hillary Clinton last week.

For more than 90 minutes at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, Pence sought to project an image as a reassuring presence, in contrast with the bombastic Trump, while Kaine tried to frighten voters away from Trump and make Clinton seem more trustworthy. "Maybe this was meant to placate mainstream Republicans who are offended by Trump's positions or ignorance".

In response, Pence denounced Putin for his interference in Syria's civil war and support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"I said forget debate prep".

Another called Pence the most valuable player of the 2016 campaign. "And when Donald Trump becomes president of the United States, we will lead with American strength on the world stage once again", he said.

Of course, not everyone thinks Pence won the debate.

Anthony Weiner under investigation for alleged sexting with a minor
The NYPD confirmed Thursday afternoon that it is investigating the latest claims against Anthony Weiner. Perhaps the critical element in this scenario is the riveting presence of Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin .

Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, speaking Wednesday morning on "Fox & Friends", claimed the Clinton camp was dealing with a "one-two punch" - a day after Bill Clinton undercut his wife's health care message by criticizing the "crazy" ObamaCare system, she said, Kaine spent Tuesday night "doing her no favors". The affair was moderated by conservative talk-radio host and Trump supporter, Howie Carr. When Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump meet Sunday night in St. Louis, they'll be fielding questions from undecided voters seated nearby. "It was Donald Trump's vision to end illegal immigration once and for all", Pence said.

Pence's cool demeanor contrasted with Trump's bluster during his own, top-of-the-ticket showdown against Clinton. In Nevada Wednesday, Trump told a gathering of pastors he was "very proud" of Pence for winning on both style and substance. He really has failed to get even a basic grounding in many important policy issues despite being on the campaign trail for over a year. "I said I was going to be here and I'm here, very simple".

During the vice presidential debate on October 4, 2016, Tim Kaine lists the comments that Donald Trump has made about various individuals and groups, including calling Mexican immigrants rapists and women slobs and pigs.

Philippe Reines, Clinton's longtime aide and defender who played Trump ahead of the first debate, will continue in the role and people close to him have said he worked to refine his Trump impersonation after the first contest.

Each night, Hillary Clinton's data experts head to a conference room on the 11th floor of her Brooklyn headquarters to start counting votes.
