"We need to find out what China's real worries are, and find an end-game they like", said Christopher Hill, who led the USA delegation to the Six-Party Talks on North Korea's nuclear program while he served as assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs.

Pyongyang said Tuesday that it tested an engine jet on the ground of a carrier rocket for the geostationary satellite, which Seoul military saw as a long-range missile.

South Korea'sDefense Ministry said its assessment was that the engine tested could be used for a long-range missile.

Outsiders view North Korea's space launches as a cover for banned ballistic missile tests as the country openly pursues long-range nuclear weapons.

The report also documents satellite photos of a conglomerate affiliated ship at a terminal in North Korea where coal and iron is exported, even though the trade in most minerals is banned by the United Nations sanctions imposed in March.

It was the second aerial show of force since the North conducted its most powerful nuclear test earlier this month in tit-for-tat actions on the already-tense peninsula.

"[The additional 40-50 percent of thrust] make it somewhat overpowered for any missile North Korea could put on a mobile transporter", according to John Schilling, an aerospace engineer and expert on North Korea's missile program.

North Korea has conducted five nuclear warhead tests this year, with the last coming on September 9.

North Korea has been testing nuclear and ballistic missiles at an unprecedented rate this year.

Washington is also working with Seoul to install a missile defence system known as THAAD in South Korea, though the move has infuriated Beijing, which says the hardware poses a significant threat to regional security. The reports did not disclose the date of the engine test. "The South Korean space programme, on the other hand, is endeavouring to get an engine of 75 tonnes of force".

Pyongyang has ignored global condemnation of its fifth nuclear test, while also continuing to test-fire missiles.

US officials on Saturday welcomed China's cooperation in investigating Ma and her associates although they said Beijing could do more to rein in Pyongyang by imposing diplomatic and financial sanctions on the belligerent state.

The U.S. has been actively pushing for China to rein in North Korea and in a recent statement responding to China's relatively muted response to the tests, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Beijing had an "important responsibility" in North Korea.
