HBO battles FX at Emmy Awards

And Game of Thrones won its 38th Emmy, a new record-breaking number for a primetime series.

Combined with its wins at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies a week ago, "Game of Thrones" won a total of 12 Emmys. The fantasy drama based on George R.R. Martin's novels also won the award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for showcasing one of the most attractive and ruthless battle sequences in "Battle of Bastards".

During her acceptance speech, "Veep" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus apologized for the political climate, saying her show may be to blame. "Our show started out as a political satire but it now feels more like a sobering documentary", she said.

Jimmy poked fun at her in his opening monologue, before it was known she would win another award on the night.

USA comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who emceed the ceremony, took time out from his opening remarks to berate Mark Burnett, who produced The Apprentice, the reality show that made Trump a household name in the US. Acting victor Vance, who sweetly thanked his wife onstage, said he's ready to hand over his trophy to her.
