Parents of NASCAR driver's father strangled his wife, killed himself

The bodies of 68-year-old Robert Gordon and 57-year-old Sharon Gordon were discovered by a neighbor on Wednesday in a home in Orange owned by Robby Gordon.

The couple is the father and stepmother of Robby Gordon, a former star in NASCAR and on other racing circuits.

Police received a 911 call around 5 p.m. on Wednesday and found the Gordons' bodies in their Orange, Calif., home, according to The Orange County Register. Police have not released their identities or details about their relationship.

When the news of Robert's and Sharon's deaths first came out, there was speculation that the cause of death was possibly murder and even worse, that Robert killed his wife and himself. Lt. Fred Lopez with the Orange Police said that family members had contacted the neighbor and asked for the couple to be checked on since they could not be reached. There are also reports that a firearm was recovered at the scene. "I am very sad for the family". Gordon said his family is in shock and grieving the loss of.

Robert W. "Robby" Gordon, 47, has raced in NASCAR, CART, IndyCar, Trans-Am, IMSA, IROC and Dakar Rally, according to the Wikipedia website, and he's now in the Speed Energy Formula Off-Road series that he created in 2013.

"My father is still my inspiration for motorsports and competition in general, and he was in the horse racing business and taught me at a young age that one horsepower wasn't going to be enough, [that I was] gonna do something different - and I was fortunate to do something different".

Gordon says he will speak about the deaths again once authorities conclude their investigation.

Johnson recalled a amusing story of riding with Bob Gordon in the Baja 500 race over 20 years ago.

"I'm so sad, and I can't believe it", the former NASCAR star said Thursday.
