Scholarships are underwritten by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and by about 420 business organizations and high education institutions that partner with it. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of USA high school seniors, includes the highest- scoring entrants in each state.

About 15,000 of the students will become finalists.

Semifinalists are chosen based on their scores on the Preliminary SAT. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of finalists.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2017. There will also be about 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships and another 4,000 scholarships sponsored by 190 colleges and universities where the students will attend. Finalists will be notified in February and winners will be announced between April and July.
