Despite mostly struggling and missing the playoffs during its inaugural season, NYCFC has quickly developed into one of Major League Soccer's best franchises in 2016, as it is now in first place in the Eastern Conference, one point better than both the New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC. NYCFC brought in $36 million in revenue in 2015.

Despite the increase in value, Forbes estimates the teams operated a year ago at a combined loss of -$6 million, with NYCFC (-$9 million) and the Red Bulls (-$5 million) dragging down the group.

Forbes.com on Wednesday released a list of the league's most valuable clubs, estimating the Seattle Sounders' worth at $285 million, tops in the league.

The Red Bulls, one of the original teams playing in its 21st season, came in at No. 11 with a $178 million valuation.

NYCFC sports three of the highest-paid players in salary and endorsements league-wide. Captain David Villa is right behind at $7.9 million ($5.9 million/$2 million), and veteran midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo ranks ninth at $7.4 million ($5.9 million/$1.5 million).

The Red Bulls don't draw as well (about 20,000 fans per game) but have a much lower payroll. NYCFC now sits atop the Eastern Conference standings (44 points, 12-8-8), and is riding a five-game home win streak.

While attendance in MLS continues to rise and impress, the TV ratings remain underwhelming.
