On a day when the lead at TPC River Highlands was a poison potato, it seemed inevitable that Knox, one up on Kelly with one hole to play, would manage to blow up. "I guarantee you he would trade places very quickly with me". It was a valuable opportunity to rack up Ryder Cup points that went unrealized, and Berger actually ended up tied with Furyk despite starting the day 16 shots ahead.

Aug 7, 2016; Cromwell, CT, USA; Jim Furyk during the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship golf tournament at TPC River Highlands.

"There's a lot of rounds by a lot of great players ahead of me that have never reached 58", Furyk said.

He was 1-over after Saturday's third round and 16 shots behind leader Daniel Berger.

It was a historic day for Jim Furyk in the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship, but history was nearly thwarted in a very unfortunate manner.

"I'm still a little stunned and a little flabbergasted", Furyk said.

Furyk turned and birdied the first three holes of the back to give him seven in a row and put him at 11-under par through 12 holes, the threshold for shooting 59 on a par-70 course. Cantlay shot a bogey-free 60 with an eagle and eight birdies.

Not too many people know the name Russell Knox, despite having already winning a tour event last November, the HSBC Champions.

But the 31-year-old Scot's second PGA Tour victory this season was overshadowed by Jim Furyk shooting a closing 58, the lowest single round score in Tour history. The 49-year-old will soon be eligible for the Champions Tour, making his stellar run all the more impressive. Knox came to 18 leading Kelly (in the clubhouse) by one. He finished the tourney at 11-under 269, tied for fifth, three strokes behind victor Russell Knox.

Knox rolled in back-to-back birdies on Nos.

During his title-winning performance, Knox used consecutive birdies on the 13th hole (523-yard par 5) and 14th hole (421-yard par 4) to create some separation, as the other frontrunners couldn't find the same heroics.

He flirted with disaster on No. 16 when he put his tee shot inches from a water hazard.

After sizing it up, Furyk rolled the ball within two feet of the cup.

Knox then parred 17 before driving into the right rough on 18, then into the bunker on his approach. He finished with nine birdies on the day and at 12-under par for the tournament, tied with Patrick Rodgers for third place. But then he fell apart with four straight bogeys on the back nine (10-13) to end his chances at a second tour win this season. They showed me more love than they ever have throughout my career here. I mean, it's - four days, you can finish first.

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) - Jim Furyk set a PGA Tour record with a 58 in the final round of the Travelers Championship on Sunday, sinking a short putt on the last hole and then thrusting his arms into the air in celebration.

Fishman said Travelers would donate $58,000 to the charity of Furyk's choice. Knox was projected to rise to fourth in the FedExCup standings.

Today, Furyk alone holds the record for the lowest round in a PGA tournament.
