While the United States has the most silver (21) and bronze (22) medals, the nation also has a sizeable lead with 26 gold medals.

Ledecky provided a stunning performance at the Rio Olympics, often winning events by ridiculous margins and beating her own world records. The latter's silver award in the 2016 Rio, though you can't say a total loss, is so far the lowest award that Michael Phelps achieved in the Rio Olympics 2016.

That meant Phelps hit the water for the third butterfly leg with work to do, and the superstar, swimming his fifth and final Olympics, didn't disappoint.

But having starred in Brazil, where he won five gold medals to take his career Olympic tally to 23, Phelps once again declared himself done with competitive swimming.

"I wanted to come back and finish my career how I wanted", he told Lauer.

"He might be there, but I won't", Phelps said with a smile.

First off, Phelps has won more individual events than any Olympian in history.

"It's a very unfortunate situation where the look could not be delivered on time", Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi said Sunday.

"He knew last night was the last one", Phelps said, referring to the 400-meter medley relay.

Phelps has generated some skeptics, including teammate Ryan Lochte.

Phelps revealed that he's learned to lull Boomer to sleep by dangling his medals back and forth.

"I was so much more emotional during these games. because I knew this was the last time", he said.

The Americans completed a haul of 33 medals in the pool including 16 golds, with Australia and Hungary trailing on three golds each. He's really been a leader on this team and that's why we came away with all these medals.

"This is the way I wanted to hang my suit up". "It's a nice number".

Felix also earned gold medals in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays in London to become the first female US track athlete to win three gold medals at a single Olympics since Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988.

It was the sixth consecutive occasion that the USA and Australia have occupied the first two places in the event at the Olympic Games.

Gregorio Paltrinieri claimed gold while his compatriot Gabriele Detti had to settle for bronze after being pipped to silver by Connor Jaeger of the US.

The victor, however, never seemed in doubt after world champion Paltrinieri took the lead at 150 metres and wore down the rest of the field to win by 4.91 seconds.

"I've said this to some of you, it's not done growing", he told reporters when he qualified for Rio.

"There was a lot of pressure on my shoulders".
