New York Yankees trade Aroldis Chapman to Chicago Cubs for prospects

The Yankees actually did it.

Fox Sports initially reported Saturday night that the Yankees were informing clubs they will trade the flame-throwing closer and hold onto fellow southpaw Andrew Miller, who's under control for two more years.

NY was discussing a trade that would send Chapman to the Chicago Cubs as part of a swap that would bring 19-year-old shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres to the Yankees, a person familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press. "If the team wants to trade me they have the last say".

"This isn't a white flag", general manager Brian Cashman said in a conference call on Monday afternoon.

A four-for-one deal is not something Cubs fans had anticipated, and the trade for Chapman hasn't been without its critics.

Chapman maintained he could be dealt and still re-sign with the Yankees as a free agent during the offseason. The trade might end up hurting Chicago in the long run, but the focus is on this year's postseason. Torres had a.275 batting average with 9 homeruns and 47 RBI's in single A advanced with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

Torres is just 19 years old but already turned enough heads to be at the top of Cubs prospect rankings and was No. 27 overall in Baseball America's 2016 midseason prospect rankings. The native of Venezuela was ranked as the 28th best prospect in the game coming into the season. He wound up contributing to an inning-ending double play and threw 40 pitches during his first career save opportunity.

Pitcher Adam Warren and young outfielders Billy McKinney, 21, and Rashad Crawford, 22, also go to the Yankees. NY acquired Chapman from the Cincinnati Reds this offseason after a deal between the Reds and the Los Angeles Dodgers fell apart over the domestic violence incident.

It is no secret the Cubs are really going for it this year. Warren, recently optioned to Triple-A Iowa, is 3-2 with a 5.91 ERA and 1.43 WHIP for the Cubs this season.

The Yankees, of course, acquired Chapman in the off-season from the Cincinnati Reds.

After arriving in The Bronx in 2012, Warren was a solid arm in the rotation and the bullpen.

There is no doubting the ability of the 28-year-old left-hander who went 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA and 20 saves in 31 games with NY.

Now that the Yankees have dealt Chapman will they also deal Miller and have Dellin Betances become the closer?

Chapman had 20 saves in 31 appearances with the Yankees and a 2.01 ERA. The fact that he can close made Chapman expendable. "Easy because we traded from an area of strength, and we are excited with the players we received for a player who was only under control for two more months". Often, it is pride and emotion and stubbornness that guides their hand, and the ingrained belief, however misguided, that true Yankees never give up and that any season in which they are not in contention for something is nothing but a failure. That move was a big step in the right direction, but the Cubs made an even bigger move to bolster their chances. They have put together an offense that can outscore most opponents and a bullpen that can shut down opponents late in games. What he can get out of his six of seven guys out there will make up for losing the 105-mile-an-hour flamethrower.
